What's the Story?
TROUBLED WATERS recounts the moments in history from before human's arrival to the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery and beyond, all through the perspective of the Alabama River. From the first humans who occupied the river's shores, injustice and power struggles have always been present. The book shows how this waterway has been connected to both oppression and activism throughout history, from slavery and segregation to the fight for voting rights and justice. As Black citizens rise up to demand equality from the U.S. Government, the river becomes both a witness to history and a symbol of hope, perseverance, and collective strength.
Is It Any Good?
This powerful and beautifully crafted picture book brings history to life through poetic, lyrical language and stunning illustrations. Troubled Waters: A River's Journey Toward Justice uses the lyrics from the traditional African-American spiritual "Wade in the Water" to draw parallels between the Alabama River's presence in major events that shaped history. Bryan Collier's mixed-media art in acrylic on canvas, watercolor, and collage is visually absorbing, with a jaw-dropping gatefold of the confrontation on the Edmund Pettus Bridge between Alabama State Police and voting rights protesters. The book is deeply thought-provoking, making it an exceptional co-reading experience and great for classroom use. A critical reminder of the power of collective strength.
