Parents need to know that What Do Brothas Do All Day? is a picture book by author-illustrator Ajuan Mance, that celebrates the joy of Black American men and boys in their everyday lives. The book is inspired by Richard Scarry's What Do People Do All Day? and provides a peak into a community rich with pride and culture. It's a simple read with limited words on each page and highlights lots of relatable experiences. Themes of story include acceptance and celebration of culture, inclusion, and self-pride.
Is It Any Good?
This simple story accomplishes much. What Do Brothas Do All Day? humanizes and demystifies the lives of Black American men and boys, for those that are curious. It also celebrates the lives of Black American men and boys and calls for pride and joy to be taken in everyday activities. The story is a nice balance between the ordinary and extraordinary qualities of Brothas' lives. Ajuan Mance's illustrations are colorful and bold. Young readers will easily be able to follow the story and the relatability can lead to fun discussions.
