What's the Story?
In WHEN DEVILS SING, Sam's car is pushed off the road by a drunk driver and she and her little brother are left for dead. As Sam's brother lies dying, one of the town's devils offers to save his life in exchange for a lie. That's one of three devil brothers that lurk in rundown Carrion, Georgia, every thirteen years when the cicadas emerge from hibernation. They strike malicious bargains and just may be linked to people who go missing and turn up dead. Another of those bargains is with Neera, a singer who wants to help her family. One of the missing people is Sam's friend Dawson, who contacts Isaiah, producer of the investigative Secrets of the South podcast, before he disappears from Neera's family's hotel. It's up to Sam, Isaiah, Neera, and Reid Langley, son of the richest and most ruthless man in the gated community of Lake Clearwater, to find Dawson and learn the vile secrets of Carrion before the cicadas stop singing and it's too late.
Is It Any Good?
Ruthless rich people, deal-making devils, and screaming cicadas conspire in this delicious horror debut set in Southwest Georgia and featuring four diverse teens. The teens—Sam, Neera, Isaiah, and Reid—are all desperate in very different ways, but are drawn together to help their missing friend. They each contribute to the search. It helps that Isaiah has a secret investigative podcast about the South, and that Neera and Sam have ties to the devil brothers from their own foolish bargains. It also helps that Reid has the inside scoop on the rich people goings-on in the gated community of Lake Clearwater. Newbie author and Georgian Xan Kaur weaves these characters' stories in well and methodically builds them into a team. Relationships are complex between the teens and among these characters and their own families, adding a wonderful depth. She's not dealing in mindless gross-you-out horror at all.
You will be good and grossed out, however, eventually, when the devils wield their powers, and when the devils hiding in plain sight—the rich people of Lake Clearwater—show their hand. The sins among the entitled aren't really that shocking in this place that harbors devils. Another twist would have served the climactic action well, but it's incredibly gripping until the end with a stirring hint of blues magic thrown in for good measure. Make sure you cue up Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" when Neera sings. It's eerier than a screaming cicada at just the right bloody moment.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the Southwest Georgia setting in When Devils Sing. How does the author use the wildlife, the weather, and descriptions of the land to paint a picture of this place? How does she skew them to enhance the unsettling nature of her horror tale?
Which characters show the most empathy for others? Which show the least? Whom do the devils favor and whom do they maliciously use at the beginning of the story? How about the end?
Isaiah's best trait is his curiosity and it ends up saving lives. Even if you don't want your own secret podcast, how can you be more curious about the community you live in? How can you make it a better place?
