A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that 23 Walks is a British romantic drama with some depiction and references to sex, and occasional strong language. Dave (Dave Johns) and Fern (Alison Steadman) develop a relationship after meeting while walking their dogs. The two are both retired and in their 60s. There is mention of complex family situations, illness, and death -- with a dog dying onscreen. There are scenes in a hospital and care home, as well as mention of housing problems and eviction. Sex is portrayed onscreen, but no nudity is shown. In one scene, it is implied that a character is suffering from erectile dysfunction. Strong language is used sparingly, but includes "f--k" and "s--t." The movie is fairly gentle and charming, though may not hold the attention of younger children.

What's the Story?
In 23 WALKS, Dave (Dave Johns) and Fern (Alison Steadman) meet while out walking their dogs. At first they don't get along, but as they continue to run into each other over the following days, they form a friendship that gradually turns into a romance. Both a little unsure, and with past and present issues making things difficult, can they accept their own flaws, and each other's, for the sake of a new beginning?
Is It Any Good?
Despite its convenient meet-cute concept, this romantic drama has an intimacy and hint of emotional rawness that elevates it above the overly quaint approach often taken to stories of older people. 23 Walks still has a few cringe-worthy encounters and moments of forced jollity that feel a little out of place. But it does a good job of exploring the realities of finding romance later in life -- particularly the complex family situations and emotional walls that can develop over the years.
Steadman is reliably strong in the role of Fern, her insecurities and coping mechanisms creeping into every exchange, while Johns (I, Daniel Blake) brings such warmth and sensitivity to his performance that it's hard not to root for him to get the girl. Sweet and sometimes funny, 23 Walks is a feel-good story that follows romance beyond puppy love -- though it does include some adorable dogs, too.
