What's the Story?

Inspired by true events, 27 NIGHTS follows Martha (Marilú Marini), an older woman in Buenos Aires whose independence comes into question when authorities decide to evaluate her mental health and living situation. Leandro (Daniel Hendler who also directed the film), a young court appointed expert, is sent to observe her and determine whether she can continue living on her own or be sent to a psychiatric hospital. As he spends time with her, he begins to piece together her history and the reasons behind her behavior while uncovering tensions among those trying to decide her future.

Life and memory collide in this Argentinean film that starts with playful comedy and slowly opens into a deeper meditation on aging, autonomy, and the meaning of family. The dramedy 27 Nights follows Martha, an older woman whose independence is constantly tested by the well-meaning but controlling adults around her. Marini is nothing short of spectacular, bringing warmth, subtle humor, and wisdom to every scene. Daniel Hendler, who stars as Leandro, the court expert appointed to Martha's case, is a perfect counterbalance: patient, empathetic, and delightfully human. Their chemistry is one of those rare pairings that feels effortless and true. The film shows how society treats its elders, and how much we can learn from their rich, lived experiences if we take the time to listen.

What makes 27 Nights so moving is how it balances social drama with humor and heart. There are moments that are profoundly tender, like Martha sharing stories of Pina Bausch or Salvador Dalí or gently showing Leandro how to loosen up at a party. The narrative never feels heavy handed, even while exploring the stakes of independence, family greed, and moral choices. It's a film that entertains, teaches, and leaves a lasting impression, making it a perfect watch for older teenagers and adults who can appreciate both its humor and its emotional depth.
