What's the Story?
Joe Nixon (Kevin Hart) is a 40-ish New York advertising executive facing a crisis at work when his campaigns and pitches are deemed "out of touch" with younger generations in 72 HOURS. His relationship is also hanging by a thread because he can't commit to girlfriend Jennifer (Teyana Taylor). When he finds himself accidentally added to a group chat about an upcoming bachelor party weekend in Miami, he decides to join the group of younger men as research into their generation. Everything goes wrong during the weekend with the groom-to-be (Mason Gooding) and his buddies (Marcello Hernández, Ben Marshall, and Kam Patterson). The group finds themselves the targets of a vendetta by a Miami drug cartel, on the receiving end of roofies, and more. Will their relationships withstand the test—and Joe's lies?
Is It Any Good?
Kevin Hart, John Cena, and Mark Wahlberg are perfecting the formula, as seen in this film, of raunchy comedies featuring grown men learning emotional lessons via improbable scenarios. Hart is surrounded by funny men in 72 Hours, and the fact that the entire cast can keep pace with him helps this movie move quickly and land regular laughs. The various subplots—the ad career, the relationship troubles, the mob chase—all function as devices to put the characters in comical situations where the stakes feel high. Just be sure to set aside your disbelief and any disposition for easy offense.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what lessons Joe and his friends learn—about themselves and their relationships with others—in 72 Hours.
How are male friendships portrayed in this film? Why is this important?
The film has a diverse cast but also makes self-aware "racist" jokes. How far do you think comedy can and should go in pushing social boundaries? Are there limits?
