What's the Story?

A NICE INDIAN BOY follows Naveen (Karan Soni), a shy Indian American doctor who struggles with his identity as a gay man while balancing his cultural traditions. Then he meets Jay (Jonathan Groff), a confident artist who charms Naveen with his own Indian upbringing, despite being White (he was adopted and raised by Indian parents). Romance spirals into love, but everything becomes more complicated when Naveen brings Jay home to meet his traditional Indian family. Stereotypes, societal norms, and family expectations collide with personal fears as Naveen and Jay navigate love and acceptance while trying to plan the wedding of their dreams.

A familiar romcom formula gets a bit of flair in this vibrant, heartfelt movie, which shines an emotionally intelligent spotlight on the complexities of love. A Nice Indian Boy is a refreshing LGBTQ+ romcom with larger-than-life feels, entertaining audiences as it celebrates big culture, big family, big laughs, and even bigger emotions. Yes, the storytelling is somewhat formulaic, but the layers of queer experiences, interracial relationships, adoption and foster care trauma, cultural respect, and family structure add emotional depth that supports the believability and earnestness of the movie's messages. Soni and Groff's chemistry balances perfectly with other characters' deadpan humor, resulting in big laughs and even bigger heart.

With parallels to movies like The Wedding Banquet and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, A Nice Indian Boy is likely to leave a lasting impression on viewers long after the credits roll. As it challenges stereotypes and societal norms, the movie doesn't shy away from having hard conversations, experiencing personal growing pains, and defying expectations for love—all while being honest, open, and true to yourself, ultimately arguing that love is always worth the effort.
