A Normal Woman
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
A NORMAL WOMAN is the story of Milla (Marissa Anita), whose marriage to the ultra-wealthy Jonathan (Dion Wiyoko) is the stuff dreams are made of until the sudden onset of a mysterious illness that affects Milla's face starts to make it clear that her chief responsibility is to be beautiful. Milla doesn't remember her childhood, and as her illness progresses, her mind also starts to become unhinged when flashbacks and hallucinations hint at a dark secret. Milla wants to know the truth about her past, but will it tear her family apart?
Is It Any Good?
This dark, psychological drama manages to build and maintain a lot of tension and suspense even while its pace is pretty slow. A Normal Woman also uses some horror and thriller elements that add to the overall creepiness. There's one teen character, and teens will relate to her as she copes with and resists pressure to conform to high standards of beauty. Though the main story is about a middle-aged married woman, there's also teen appeal in the ultra-wealthy lifestyle she lives.
There's also some food for thought about beauty, self esteem, childhood trauma, and more. The acting is pretty solid, although one or two characters venture into soap-opera-level dramatics. The story itself has a few holes, but if you're in the mood for a slow-burn psychological drama, this one fits the bill nicely.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the horror elements in A Normal Woman. Is it too much, or does it strike a good balance between creepy but not too scary?
How does Milla summon the courage to leave the life that made her so unhappy? How does Angel use compassion to help Milla?
Does the world Milla moves in seem extra obsessed with wealth and beauty? What about your world? Does the media you consume affect how you see yourself, or how you think about what's important in life?
