What's the Story?

The air-headed Aiman (Hairul Azreen) works at a Malaysian resort in ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. His best friend Jane (Janna Nick), a chef, has been vainly trying to "confess" to him her love, but can never seem to get it out without retracting. Everyone but Aiman knows. He finally figures it out when armed kidnappers posing as guests snatch a rich guy staying there. Jane tries to help, but ends up a hostage. The assailants, armed with machine guns, massacre guests and staff (though no blood is shown), requiring that the incompetent staffers and manager concoct a plan to outwit their foes. They amass a line-up of water balloons and squirt guns, as well as an armada of cleaning carts for the attack. Jane's plight awakens Aiman to how important she has always been to him. Suddenly, the recessive Aiman vows to save his "love," even throwing himself on a lobbed grenade to protect Jane and friends. Will he save the day?

This movie is more terrible than the worst American sitcom imaginable, but three times longer. Unfunny actors, trying way too hard, are forced to utter unfunny dialogue as they plod through unfunny, hugely implausible situations. What begins as light-hearted dopiness switches to the seriousness of kidnapping, the victim a wealthy hotel guest and the criminals a bevy of armed assailants who mow down staff and guests with automatic weaponry. (No blood is shown, but people are killed.)

The credits alert us that All Because of You was "Produced with Financial Assistance Of 30% Cash Rebate from the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia." While funding is an important element in filmmaking, the far more important infusion of taste, talent, and ideas is what this movie needed. This feels like it was made by and for kids. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, that iconic Disney channel kids' show of the 2000s, was far more engaging.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the comedy clichés used throughout All Because of You. Do you think this movie was modeled after American sitcoms? Why or why not?

  • Who this movie was made for? Does this feel like an adult-level comedy? Why or why not?

  • The script deliberately paints the lead character as an idiot. What are the advantages and disadvantages of that strategy?
