What's the Story?

Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) is launching a book tour for her true crime novel when her ex-best friend, Emily Nelson (Blake Lively), shows up at a book signing. Emily asks Stephanie for ANOTHER SIMPLE FAVOR: Come to the Isle of Capri to be her maid of honor at her upcoming wedding.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 3 ):
Kids say ( 6 ):

Like Emily's extravagant wedding on the island of Capri, Paul Feig's sequel is a stylish, high-gloss game of cat and mouse—deliciously excessive in the best way. And, like a bridesmaid's travel bag going to a destination wedding, it's overflowing with elements from the first film. That's not necessarily a bad thing; it's just impossible not to notice.

Relocating the action to a glamorous European vacation location gives the movie a Hitchcockian flair—think To Catch a Thief, with sharper cheekbones. The banter between the stars is electric: Lively and Kendrick riff off of each other with the precision of classic screwball duos, yet invent a voice that's entirely their own. Their frenemy chemistry is razor-sharp: witty, unfiltered, and teetering between affection and antagonism. Sure, it's all a bit overstuffed, and viewers are likely to solve the mystery well before Stephanie does. But like a decadent Italian getaway, no matter what, it's fabulous fun.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how women are depicted in Another Simple Favor. Are they positive or negative depictions? Are Stephanie and Emily "cool"—and should they be?

  • Discuss Stephanie and Emily's frenemyship. While this is obviously an extreme example, is there anything you relate to? Is there anything aspirational in it—and, if so, can you define why?

  • How do Stephanie's curiosity and integrity help drive her? Why are these important character strengths?

  • How did the movie's violence make you feel? Is it what you expect from a "dark comedy"?

  • When making a sequel, what elements from the original should be included? How does this movie compare to other sequels you've seen?
