What's the Story?

AZTEC BATMAN: CLASH OF EMPIRES follows Yohualli Coatl (Jay Hernandez), the son of an Aztec leader killed by Spanish conquistadors led by Hernán Cortés (Alvaro Morte), who flees to Tenochtitlán where he comes up with a secret identity inspired by a bat god to fight the conquistadors. Alongside allies like Catwoman (Teresa Ruiz), he leads a rebellion against Cortés and his forces to protect his people and preserve their culture.

Director Juan Meza-León reminds us that superheroes have become the cultural touchstones of our generation and uses that power to shine a light on history that has too often been forgotten or erased. In Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, the all-too familiar hero takes on a new moral complexity, which feels fresh given how often we've seen this story be told. Batman has been a ninja, a god, a superhero from another dimension, and even a T-Rex! But seeing Batman reframed within the story of the Spanish conquest of Mexico is very powerful, especially as the film acknowledges events like the Cholula Massacre and other historical moments that have not been mentioned much in films.

Notably, the film celebrates the richness of Mexican culture and the beauty of Aztec history. It's a work of pop culture, yes, but it's also a piece of cultural memory, reminding viewers of their roots and that stories need to be passed on. It's too bad the violence makes it so inaccessible for younger children. For older kids, though, it's a gift, a thrilling story told with intelligence, heart, and authenticity, one that honors both the superhero myth and the deeper history it now carries.
