Back in Action
What's the Story?
In BACK IN ACTION, Matt (Jamie Foxx) and Emily (Cameron Diaz) are a couple of spies who find out they're having a baby just as their lives are endangered by international mercenaries pursuing a powerful cyberterrorism key. Flash forward 15 years, and the pair has gone into hiding in an anonymous American suburb, where they're raising their two kids, teenager Alice (McKenna Roberts) and tech-nerd Leo (Rylan Jackson). When their real identities are discovered, and it turns out Matt still has the sought-after key, the couple must go on the run again, this time with kids in tow. They're pursued by British spy Baron (Andrew Scott) and former colleague Chuck (Kyle Chandler) to London, where Emily's former-spy mom, Ginny (Glenn Close), lives with her new boyfriend, wannabe spy Nigel (Jamie Demetriou).
Is It Any Good?
Despite the hype surrounding Cameron Diaz's return to screen, this film feels overly familiar from the start. Diaz and Foxx have great chemistry in Back in Action, and the film sports some witty banter and exciting action sequences, particularly an early plane crash (though the jazzy soundtrack behind fight scenes gets old fast). Supporting performances from Chandler, Scott, Close, and especially Demetriou as the bumbling beau all add to the fun. The child actors are excellent, especially precocious Jackson.
But haven't we seen the concept of married couple/parents with secret lives many times before? Think True Lies, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Spy Kids series, The Sleepover, Family Plan, and Role Play, to name just a few. Maybe because of this, the film seems to struggle to settle on a tone, switching a little frenetically between comedy and serious action/threat (involving kids in danger). Still, Netflix knows it has an audience draw here, meaning sequels are likely. So, settle in and enjoy the mindlessness of it all for what it's worth.
