What's the Story?

In BETRAYAL, following years of abuse, brothers John (Brian Vernel), Henry (Daniel Portman), and Vince (Calum Ross) kill their father in some woods. But when they go back to retrieve a key to the family safe, they discover the body is no longer in the shallow grave where they buried him.

This overplotted Scottish thriller is equal parts family drama and bloody revenge saga. While Betrayal (titled Kill in some countries) aims to strike that balance, it struggles to flesh out its characters or generate any real intrigue. Perhaps the film's biggest flaw is that the three brothers at the heart of the story mostly speak in exposition, leaving few shared, memorable moments between them. As a result, the cast is left to air even their secrets in plodding fashion. Paul Higgins brings the most tension as the brothers' monstrous father, particularly in scenes where he dishes out small, humiliating threats to assert control. A mumbled subplot about money, that will supposedly set the brothers and their repressed mother free, feels like the only thing pushing the story forward at times, before the next eruption of violence.
