What's the Story?

Heather "Razzlekhan" Morgan and Ilya "Dutch" Lichtenstein met and fell in love in Silicon Valley, and then moved to New York and seemed to be living a cosmopolitan and international lifestyle in BIGGEST HEIST EVER. What their friends didn't know is that the funds for that lifestyle apparently came from a major infiltration of a cryptocurrency exchange site called Bitfinex. The perpetrators of the heist made off with $4.5 billion worth of Bitcoin. It would take investigators years to pin the crime on Heather and Ilya. This is their story.

A heist that takes place entirely online could present challenges for a filmmaker to bring to screen, and this film shows how it can be done. Biggest Heist Ever matches look and tone to subject by positioning talking heads in dark, computer-lit rooms and editing interviews together with animated explainers of how cryptocurrency works, social media videos, and dramatic reenactments. It all moves at a fast clip, with tense music humming in the background to build suspense while it painstakingly reconstructs the heist and the personalities and experiences of the characters involved.
