Black Bag
What's the Story?
In BLACK BAG, high-ranking British intelligence agent George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) is asked to identify a traitor inside the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS). He's given a list of five suspects, all of whom are his close colleagues—and one of whom he's madly in love with: his wife, Kathryn (Cate Blanchett).
Is It Any Good?
Clever and concise (93 minutes!), director Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller is sexy, stylish, and smart. While movies can often be a great opportunity for a brain break, Black Bag is a bit of a brain workout, with its mix of mystery and thriller—but not quite so much work as an Agatha Christie-style whodunit. The pace moves quickly (a Soderbergh specialty), but viewers are still able to absorb every moment.
In telling this story of married spies, writer David Koepp gives us the antidote to Mr. and Mrs. Smith: a story that's unabashedly marriage affirming. Offering both entertainment and decent conversation opportunities, it's ideal for a dinner-and-a-movie date night.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Black Bag's line "When you can lie about everything, how do you tell the truth about anything?" How might that apply to the challenge of identifying "fake news" and propaganda, and how do we make decisions if there's a permission structure in the world to lie? Why does the truth matter?
What is integrity? How do the movie's characters act with their own interpretation of integrity? What is the war that the SIS is concerned with, and, thinking about it in terms of a real war, what do you think is their most ethical choice?
Viewers need to understand George's deep devotion to Kathryn. How does Soderbergh accomplish this with cinematography, costumes, hair, and makeup?
Many consider Mr. and Mrs. Smith to be the defining married-spies thriller. How does Black Bag compare? Imagine other scenarios with spies who are in a relationship.
