What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal and Greed is a documentary about the celebrity TV painter that delves into some darker and lesser-known aspects of his career and life. In interviews, Ross's son, friends, and former colleagues accuse Ross's former business partners of crossing ethical lines in beating away competitors in the art field and securing the rights to Ross's name and likeness. They also reveal their belief that Ross had an affair with his female business partner while married. Still, Ross is portrayed and remembered as a charming, charismatic, kind, and flirtatious showman with a heart of gold. He was aware of and capitalized on his attractiveness to a female audience, using a soft, sexy voice and saying things while painting like, "make love to it" or "caress it." The film suggests the title of his show, "The Joy of Painting," was an allusion to, among other things, the book The Joy of Sex. Ross's son describes his own near nervous breakdown after his father's death from cancer, and other fans of the painter provide testimonials about how his soothing show helped them through difficult times, including suicide attempts or a terminated pregnancy. People smoke and use language like "bulls--t," "BS," "hell," "devil," and "dang."

What's the Story?
BOB ROSS: HAPPY ACCIDENTS, BETRAYAL AND GREED delves into the life of the celebrated TV painter and his rise to fame in the 1980s. Archive footage, including from Ross's popular show "The Joy of Painting," and interviews with his son, friends, and former colleagues describe their relationships with him, his personal characteristics, his young adulthood, and what drove him to want to teach the world to paint. They also accuse Ross's former business associates of scheming to eliminate competitors and secure the rights to Ross's name and image after his death.
Is It Any Good?
Bob Ross is having a moment, and this film both capitalizes on his continued popularity and critiques the multi-million-dollar business built up around him. Produced by Melissa McCarthy, her husband Ben Falcone, Steven Berger, and regular partner Divya D'Souza, Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal and Greed offers some revelations about the beloved celebrity, including details concerning his hair and a possible affair. But the main claim of those interviewed is that Ross's former business partners, Annette and Walt Kowalski, unethically undermined competitors in the TV painting business and made away with sole rights to Ross's name and image after his death.
The fact that these are now owned and lucratively exploited by someone other than Ross's family, and in a way that would seem to contradict much of what Ross stood for and wanted himself, is an understandable source of heartache for his loved ones. It's also a juicy narrative hook for the film. But the man also deserves a film focused more on his who he was, what made him tick, what he accomplished during his life, and what he meant to people, which is a lot judging by the testimonials here. The documentary's interest for the global audience of Ross fans may actually be limited by its dogged focus on the Kowalskis and the missing pieces of this puzzle (more than a dozen interviews were declined, we're told, including the Kowalskis). His legion of fans should know about this saga, but the film could have struck a better balance.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the lasting appeal of the celebrity TV painter profiled in Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal and Greed. What do people say Ross means to them? Why do you think his show and personality have such lasting appeal?
The documentary asserts that more than a dozen people declined to be interviewed. Why? How does this affect the story being told?
The director of the film aimed to create a palette that feels like Ross's "homespun style," not imposing anything "hyper stylized" and keeping the look "simple and quaint." Do you think he was successful? Why or why not?
What are the "happy accidents" mentioned in the film's title?
