What's the Story?

BOLAN'S SHOES begins during the height of glam rock, when a group of school kids—obsessed with T. Rex front man Marc Bolan—are in a bus crash on the way from a concert, killing some of those on board. Fast-forward to the present day, and Jimmy (Timothy Spall) and Penny (Leanne Best) take a trip to the shrine for Bolan—who himself died in a car accident—bringing back memories of that fateful, devastating night that changed their lives forever.

This British drama is a tough watch. Bolan's Shoes explores childhood trauma, with its two leads struggling to come to terms with painful events from their past. As the full extent of their histories slowly unfurls, the interwoven T. Rex soundtrack offers a rare respite from the film's heavy emotional atmosphere. Both Penny, and especially Jimmy, wrestle with regret, shame, and guilt but ultimately find a sense of closure together, aided by their shared love of T. Rex and the titular Marc Bolan. Spall and Best deliver powerful performances, but the film's relentless bleakness, while emotionally profound, can leave audiences grappling with the film's tone and purpose and may leave them questioning exactly what kind of film Bolan's Shoes aims to be.
