Borderless Fog
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In BORDERLESS FOG, Sanja (Putri Marino) is called in from Jakarta to help solve a series of murders. Suspecting a serial killer, Sanja must navigate odd characters, local superstitions, and corrupt police on her way to the answers. Can she find the killer before they strike again? Or is she chasing shadows?
Is It Any Good?
Unfortunately, pacing and script issues let down strong performances in this thriller. There are also sequencing problems in Borderless Fog that confuse things, making it hard to follow exactly what's going on. The film spends a lot of time setting up the story, bringing in historical political divisions and alliances that contextualize and shade events and characters in various ways. But this film is best when it's trying to be a simple and pure crime thriller, with a lead investigator, circling cops, dubious superiors, and possible suspects, each of whom could easily end up the killer.
Here, though, this basic premise is constantly interrupted by slow character-building moments that don't hit, confusing scene jumps that aren't explained, and a consistent flirtation with the paranormal that never materializes. The film almost ends up trying to say something about how different cultures and groups of people need to work together for a better society, but this message is never fully earned or felt. But the primary cast is excellent, and the lead, Sanja, is decidedly watchable and compelling. It's just too bad there wasn't more to work with here.
