Burning Betrayal
What's the Story?
As BURNING BETRAYAL begins, Babi (Giovanna Lancellotti), who is about to marry Caio (Micael), nevertheless has an erotic dream about recklessly riding motorcycles with a handsome man and then passionately having sex with him. Caio, too, soon makes love to Babi, giving us two sex scenes within the film's first four minutes. Caio is a contractor with Babi's business, and he mentions he must testify in court, assuring Babi not to worry. That little aside sets up a criminal subplot that references a crime syndicate, fraud, and money laundering. When Babi learns that Caio is cheating on her (pictures of his sexual treachery show up at her bachelorette party), she dumps him just as she realizes that Marco (Leandro Lima), the handsome judge presiding over the court, is the man in her motorcycle dream. Despite her devastation after the cancelation of her wedding, she gets together with him and they have passionate sex in a kitchen, shower, dining room, living room, bedroom, and beach chair. All along, her gal pal Paty (Camilla de Lucas) and best friend and business partner Thiago (Bruno Montaleone) support her as she recovers from the breakup with Caio, and warn her as she heedlessly begins with the mysterious and secretive Marco.
Is It Any Good?
The entire plot of Burning Betrayal is based on the implausible premise that a really nice person and great friend is actually a vicious, murderous criminal. If you are willing to accept that, then this movie may work for you. But if that seems utterly ridiculous, then the weak plot wrapped around sex scenes with beautiful actors may feel tedious and silly. Just as a man is about to murder someone who can expose his crimes, he explains what motivated him and his partner to break the law as follows: A) needing more cash and B) wanting to have sex with women other than a fiancé. Just to wrap things up nicely and remind us what this movie is really about, a couple is seen having sex as the movie ends.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how cheating in a monogamous relationship ends up being a triggering factor in the story. Do you think the motives for committing murder are plausible here? Why or why not?
Babi doesn't seem to want to get married, yet she is devastated when she breaks up with her fiancé. Does she seem believable? Why or why not?
Does the movie present a particular attitude about sex? A woman devastated by a breakup immediately pursues a new man for sex. What is the movie telling us about what sex means to her and the new man?
