Chantilly Bridge
What's the Story?
Thirty years after the funeral of their dear friend, Natalie (JoBeth Williams), a group of childhood buddies reunites to help Natalie's sister, Shelley (Patricia Richardson), pack up her late mother Ruth's house, which contains Natalie's belongings. The women talk and laugh while reflecting on life, loss, and the challenges that come with getting older, all while preparing to scatter Ruth's ashes on CHANTILLY BRIDGE.
Is It Any Good?
Linda Yellen's follow-up to her groundbreaking 1993 female-forward friendship drama is notable for its depiction of mature women -- but for teens, it's likely to be exceptionally boring. From ageism to waning sexual libido to family resentments to memory loss and grief, Yellen doesn't just give a voice to women in their 60s and 70s -- she allows many voices to weigh in on the same topic. For women of a certain age (a demographic often neglected on the big screen), Chantilly Bridge offers validation, relatability, and the opportunity to feel seen. Yellen does expand the point of view to include Hannah's daughter, who hangs with her mom's friends quite a lot, but it's still missing the mark to reach teens. If you're in the market for a "Grandma & Me" movie, keep looking.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how often women in their 60s and 70s are main characters in movies -- and how often they're realistically portrayed. Why does representation on screen matter?
How is compassion demonstrated in Chantilly Bridge, and by which characters? Why is it an important life skill?
How does the filmmaker use improvisational acting to bring a naturalness to the performances? How did she create a fly-on-the-wall point of view for the audience -- and how does this compare to some of your favorite movies?
