What's the Story?

A film within a film within a mockumentary, CHAPTER 51 follows the story of a former FBI agent Thomas Scott (writer and director Tyler Shields), who reopens the unsolved case of The Hollywood Killer, where three actresses were killed on the set of the film Dissident. Examining film footage, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviewing the endless list of suspects, Scott tries to piece together what happened on the toxic film set.

Creative filming techniques and an intriguing whodunit premise are somewhat buried beneath a cast of over-the-top Hollywood privileged characters in Chapter 51. The slow suspect reveal has so much promise as the story feeds on audience assumptions as it peels back the layers of riveting characters. However, focused more on exposing the dark clichés of the Hollywood entertainment industry and less on a cohesive mystery-crime story, this stylish film gets lost in endless yelling, overacting, and sending up the obvious Hollywood tropes and stereotypes. As the loud characters blur together, the riveting plot unravels. More intelligent storytelling and less noise would've set up a much more satisfying conclusion.
