What's the Story?
In CHRISTMAS FULL OF GRACE, Carlinhos is excited to propose to his fiance Bebela, but when he comes home from work, he finds her in the bathtub with another woman. While trying to flee his apartment building, he runs into Graca (Gkay), an eccentric woman from the countryside who has just been robbed. To avoid the shame of returning home to see his family for the holidays with the news about his now ex-fiance, Carlinhos asks Graca to accompany him and pose as his new girlfriend. Upon arrival, it doesn't take long for Graca's wild behavior to cause concern for Carlinhos' mostly uptight family, particularly his grandmother, who is about to turn over the family's multi-million-dollar business to the grandson she finds the worthiest. While Carlinhos and Graca try to maintain the fiction they've presented, other family members seek to find out the truth, and when they do, Carlinhos must come to grips with his true feelings for Graca.
Is It Any Good?
This is a mostly obnoxious and not-that-funny Brazilian holiday romcom. Christmas Full of Grace starts off with a truly ridiculous premise, milks it for all of its worth, includes some obligatory references to Christmas and the meaning of Christmas, and hilarity doesn't ensue. It's a weird movie, but not a good kind of weird movie. The overall takeaway is annoyance.
Furthermore, the third act includes some incredibly creepy stalker vibes that make the stalker energy of many now-dated '80s teen movies seem tame by comparison. Any attempts at positive messages on the meaning of the holidays or the meaning of love or how it's ok to be different come across as forced and are likely to be lost in the morass of stale jokes and underwhelming physical humor.
