This British action flick pays such homage to Die Hard that it really should have been called "Try Hard." Cleaner borrows the same premise as the 1988 classic: a group of terrorists seize a skyscraper and take a group of party-goers hostage, with their only hope being Ridley's Locke, a window cleaner trapped high up the building's exterior. Director Martin Campbell—no stranger to action (Casino Royale, Goldeneye)—even drops a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Easter egg in the form of a tweet from McClane_1988. But when a film mirrors one of cinema's most beloved action flicks, it invites direct comparison. Campbell gives it a modern spin. The terrorists' motivation is saving the planet, and Ridley's police partner on the ground is female. Ridley is believable as a former army recruit with a rebellious streak, but it's frustrating how long it takes for her to actually get inside the building and put her skills to use. The film also struggles to reconcile its eco-friendly message with the actions of its villains. Still, there's a B-movie charm about the film and, at just 96 minutes, it never drags.
