What's the Story?

In CONSEQUENCES, teen Andrej (Matej Zemljic) refuses to back down from confrontation, which soon wins him the acceptance of the "alpha dogs" at the juvenile detention facility where Andrej's just been sent. At first Andrej's relieved not to be a victim anymore, and happy to partake of the illegal bounty his small-time criminal friends enjoy. But he doesn't have it in him to be the kind of violent, aggressive enforcer Zele (Timon Sturbej) and Niko (Gasper Markun) want him to be. But no one could have imagined the consequences when Zele and Niko finally turn against Andrej, least of all Andrej himself.

Is It Any Good?

This grim, heartbreaking look at a troubled teen is definitely a downer, but offers lots to discuss with mature teens who can handle it. Consequences is a high-quality production overall, but what really stands out is the acting. Matej Zemljic as Andrej somehow lets us see both the mask he puts on to hide his feelings and everything he's actually feeling quite deeply at the same time. He's more than ably supported by the terrifying Timon Sturbej as Zele and Gasper Markun as Niko, as well as by the wishy-washy staff of the detention facility, his fed-up mother, and the other kids at the detention facility.

The story moves along well, although for adults nearly every turn of events is completely predictable. This provides a good opportunity to talk to your kids about what they were able to predict, and whether or why Andrej saw any of it coming, too. Excessive drugs, alcohol, profanity, and violence, as well as mature sexual situations, make it best for the most mature, older teens.
