Did we miss something on diversity?

Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.

A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this movie.

Positive Messages

Teens need consequences, even when they're rebelling against them. Bad choices in friendships, behavior, and actions will have consequences eventually. You have to change and make better choices if you want to avoid unintended consequences.

Positive Role Models

Andrej is a complicated character we sympathize with because he's obviously unhappy and in a lot of emotional pain, but his poor, and ever-worsening, choices and lack of self control make him a negative role model. Zele and Niko are violent thugs with no redeeming qualities. Adults are all either unsympathetic or unable to offer any appealing guidance.

A teen punches another repeatedly in the face with brass knuckles; the bloody face is shown once briefly, crunching sounds are heard, and blood spatters remain on the perpetrator for an extended time afterward. A hazing-style sexual assault shows teens forcing another, who's blindfolded on hands and knees, to lick someone's anus; only bare buttocks are visible. A teen girl crying in her underwear at a party after we see her being grabbed forcefully implies she's a victim of physical violence that isn't specified. Lots of fights and brawls with punching, choking, throwing bottles, one instance of coughing up blood shown. Lots of hostility and aggression, both verbal and physical. Teens steal a car and gas for the car. Teens engage in extortion. A cyberbullying Facebook post becomes a major plot point. A pet rat dies and its body is shown being flushed down a toilet.

Lots of kissing and making out, mostly between same-sex couples with simulated stimulation just out of frame. An opposite-sex couple making out on a bed briefly becomes a threesome, then a same-sex couple, then a same-sex threesome. Later the same-sex couple wakes up in bed implying sex took place. A teen girl's buttocks are shown while she's making out on a bed in a bra and thong panties. A teen grabs his genitals over his clothing as an aggressive gesture. Teens imitate sexual acts like thrusting and with hand gestures. A teen puts his hand down the back of his male friend's jeans.

Translated from Slovenian:  "f--k," "c--t," "d--k" (body part), "p---y," "a--hole," "s--t," "son of a bitch," "retard," "bitches," "dips--t," "f-ggot," and graffiti that reads "MTHRFCKR."

Branded products including food, beverage, alcohol, and tobacco products are shown incidentally. Facebook mentioned and a cyberbullying post becomes a major plot point.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Teen main characters almost constantly smoking. Frequent drinking to excess while also smoking marijuana and snorting cocaine is shown. A teen recommends weed as a way to cope in a detention facility. A teen throws up in the street on the way home from a party.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Consequences is a drama in Slovenian with English subtitles about a troubled teen with lots of violence, drug use, drinking, and profanity. No sensitive body parts are shown, but there's lots of kissing, making out, simulated stimulation, and implied sex, mostly between same-sex couples. Violence includes a hazing-style sexual assault; repeated punches to the face with brass knuckles; fighting and brawls with punching and choking; criminal activity like robbery, auto theft, and extortion; and lots of verbal and physical hostility and aggression. Teens frequently drink to excess, smoke marijuana, and snort cocaine. Profanity in translation includes "f--k," "c--t," "p---y," and more. Verbal hostility includes names like "retard," "faggot," and "dips--t." It's a great opportunity to talk to your mature teens about, well, consequences: What leads us to our choices and actions, and what are the results?

What's the story?

In CONSEQUENCES, teen Andrej (Matej Zemljic) refuses to back down from confrontation, which soon wins him the acceptance of the "alpha dogs" at the juvenile detention facility where Andrej's just been sent. At first Andrej's relieved not to be a victim anymore, and happy to partake of the illegal bounty his small-time criminal friends enjoy. But he doesn't have it in him to be the kind of violent, aggressive enforcer Zele (Timon Sturbej) and Niko (Gasper Markun) want him to be. But no one could have imagined the consequences when Zele and Niko finally turn against Andrej, least of all Andrej himself.

Is it any good?

This grim, heartbreaking look at a troubled teen is definitely a downer, but offers lots to discuss with mature teens who can handle it. Consequences is a high-quality production overall, but what really stands out is the acting. Matej Zemljic as Andrej somehow lets us see both the mask he puts on to hide his feelings and everything he's actually feeling quite deeply at the same time. He's more than ably supported by the terrifying Timon Sturbej as Zele and Gasper Markun as Niko, as well as by the wishy-washy staff of the detention facility, his fed-up mother, and the other kids at the detention facility.

The story moves along well, although for adults nearly every turn of events is completely predictable. This provides a good opportunity to talk to your kids about what they were able to predict, and whether or why Andrej saw any of it coming, too. Excessive drugs, alcohol, profanity, and violence, as well as mature sexual situations, make it best for the most mature, older teens.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the Consequences in this movie. What kinds of consequences were there for what types of choices or behaviors? Were there things that should have had consequences but didn't? How do consequences affect our choices? Do they help us build character?

  • What about the drinking and drug use? Is it realistic, and does it matter if it is? Is it glorified?

  • How much violence is OK to show in movies? Was the violence in this movie realistic, and does that matter? Does seeing it in movies affect you differently than other media like TV, video games, or books?
