Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Control Freak is an American horror movie about a Vietnamese American motivational speaker named Val (Kelly Marie Tran) who's become successful and virally famous. But just as her career is about to jump to the next level, she starts feeling an itch at the back of her head, and it doesn't go away. Expect strong violence, gore, injury detail, self-harm, and mutilation. A large demon creature with scary claws, head, and thousands of insects constantly crawling all over its skin repeatedly threatens, chases, and attacks a character. A character scratches a spot on the back of her head until she makes a bloody hole, which she pushes her own finger into before passing out. A person uses a saw to cut through their own wrist; it's gory, with skin, bone, and blood flying everywhere. It's then cauterized. A character also saws through a demon's arm, face, and head. Other scenes include stabbing, hordes of countless crawling bugs, images of rashes/bumps/ther skin conditions, drowning, vomiting, and a child being shot by a soldier. A character drugs, knocks out, and ties another character to a bed. Adult characters have sex a few times, one character performs implied oral sex, a woman's side breasts are shown during a sex scene, and a man masturbates in the shower (bare buttocks shown). Characters often smoke cigarettes, and one often vapes. A character with a drug dependency hides his drugs in his bedroom, and a person snorts some kind of powder. Strong language includes "f--k," "s--t," "ass," "sucks," "hard-on," and "junkie."

Positive Role Models
a little
Val is a successful businesswoman with a lot to be proud of. She gets a little selfish, but she's fighting an inner demon. Robbie is a supportive and loving husband who is also a solid business partner.
In CONTROL FREAK, everything is going well for Valerie Nguyen (Kelly Marie Tran). She's a successful motivational speaker with a loving husband. But Val's family trauma might be catching up with her. And an itch at the back of her head just won't go away.
There are fun ideas and thrilling sequences in this body horror movie. But there are also some flaws in Control Freak, and they keep this decent thriller from being great. For example, the pacing could have been sharpened, as some scenes feel too lingered on and drawn out. Some of the casting might not work for some audiences. The first third is entirely too expository. The monster design is a little lacking in originality. And so on.
But the film might also be applauded for its organic, baked-in character study in a horror package, which itself isn't necessarily new. How this film taps into the brutal, violent, and ethically challenging historical backdrop of the Vietnam War and family historical trauma, however, might be. Many might also ponder the ways the horror in this film is a metaphor for mental and behavioral health issues, and especially within a community like Val's.
