Daughter of the Bride
What's the Story?
In DAUGHTER OF THE BRIDE, Kate (Halston Sage) and her mother, Diane (Marcia Gay Harden), have been best friends since Kate's father walked out of their lives when Kate was very young. The two count on each other for everything, and Kate has always admired the way her mom taught her to be a strong, independent woman capable of doing anything she sets her mind to. That is, until Diane meets Bruce (Aidan Quinn), and faster than Kate would like, Diane and Bruce announce their engagement. Kate's fierce resistance to change suddenly moves to the forefront, threatening to tear them apart once and for all.
Is It Any Good?
This otherwise run-of-the-mill romantic comedy gets a little lift from the refreshing perspective of seeing the story through the strong mother-daughter relationship at its heart. Daughter of the Bride's outcome is never in doubt, and it sags a bit in the middle. But the likable cast and sometimes funny dialogue make it a nice mother-daughter movie night choice for romcom fans. There's not a lot of concerning content, but the all-adult cast may be more relatable and interesting to high schoolers and up.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how drinking alcohol is depicted in Daughter of the Bride. Is it realistic? Is it OK if the people drinking are adults? Do the circumstances, like a wedding or a date, matter?
What about the sexual content? Is it too much? How much is OK?
Romantic comedies are always popular. Why do we love them? What are some of your favorites? How does this one compare?
