Lots of gore, blood, jump scares in tired horror tale.

Death Whisperer
What's the Story?
In DEATH WHISPERER, a Thai family of farmers that includes three brothers and three sisters must fend off an evil and demonic presence.
Is It Any Good?
This is a straightforward movie, but it's too long. The tone of Death Whisperer also struggles to be consistent, and for many, most of the horror will be too ridiculous to generate any real scares. The music doesn't help the tonal confusion either, as many scenes are accompanied by happy, playful, and almost childlike melodies (and not in an eerily scary way that it could be) only for an abrupt switch into high-pitch string screeches and windy whooshes. Further, the acting seems a bit overly dramatic, and the family dynamic feels overwrought and contrived.
Despite not being all that clear about what exactly is happening (is it a haunting, is it demons, is it ghosts?), the film does try its hardest with many jump scares and scary and gory visuals, but for fans of horror, most of these moments won't land because they will see them coming a mile away. A few of the visuals are fun, though, even if they are explicitly taken from other movies like Evil Dead or Smile. Still, while new fans of the genre might enjoy this, most will have seen what's been done here many times over.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about violence in horror films. Did any of the violence in Death Whisperer surprise you? Was it convincing? Why or why not?
Were the jump scares effective? If not, why weren't they?
