What's the Story?

In DHOOM DHAAM, Veer (Pratik Gandhi) and Koyal (Yami Gautam) are arranged to be married soon. But they don't know each other at all. And Koyal isn't who her family says she is. So, when the newlyweds-to-be suddenly find themselves on the run from some criminals, they don't have much time to get to know each other. Together, they might just figure out what's going on and find an unconventional way to love.

With a clear comedic tone, most of the violence in this action comedy is quite tame. Some moments in Dhoom Dhaam come close to tipping over the comedic line, but generally this movie wants to be an easy and digestible watch. The characters are indeed easy to watch, but more Koyal than Veer, who particularly feels like a party pooper most of the film. Whether this is because of how he was originally conceived, a lack of direction, or a lack of charismatic chops from the actor, it's a bit off-putting, as there is so much life to Koyal. Veer, by contrast, just seems boring and not very interesting. To make up for this, the story puts Veer into situations that are meant to bring him out of his shell, and they kind of do, but not by much.

Repeating this tired romantic comedy trope of pairing boring men with attractive, lively, interesting women doesn't help things, nor does the film's reliance on toilet humor for its comedy. Perhaps this is why Koyal gets a few marquee moments to testify to the unfair pressures placed on women in India. Her "speech" outside a club is memorable. While this moment might feel to many viewers a little elementary and behind the times, this "feminism 101" message is still worth sharing, especially for younger viewers who haven't heard it before.
