What's the Story?

Greg (voiced by Aaron Harris) and his dad Frank (Chris Diamantopoulos) rarely see eye to eye in DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: THE LAST STRAW. Fed up with what he sees as Greg's lack of life skills or incentive, Frank decides Greg should go to a military academy to learn some discipline. Instead, Greg talks him into letting him try to learn responsibility through a local boys' club. When he gets caught taking shortcuts and lying to get his badges, Greg looks destined for the academy. That is, unless a last camping weekend turns things around.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

This series' winning combo of couching positive lessons, sweet family dynamics, and cheeky humor into one fun package continues in this latest adaptation. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw is a story about dads and sons. The animation—which includes scenes straight out of the book—will appeal to younger viewers, and it allows for more entertaining hijinks (dogs flying, dads carried away by rushing rivers, kindergartners jumping off high places) than live action. The lessons will likely land just right with those younger viewers as well.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about what Greg and Frank learn in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw.

  • How does Greg save the day at the campsite? Was this turnaround believable? Does that matter to you? Why or why not?

  • How does this film compare with the book and with other film adaptations of the series?

  • The dads are competitive about their children's accomplishments in this film. Have you seen parents behave this way in real life? How does it impact their kids? Where's the line between pride and boasting?
