A heartfelt, winsome romcom, Double Happiness is double the dose of humanity and humor in a relatable healing journey. While the storyline is predictable, this international take on a chaotic wedding day provides nuance with insight into Chinese/Taiwanese traditions, culture, and family dynamics. Painfully self-aware of the Asian stereotypical struggle to balance parental expectations and finding your own happiness, director Hsu utilizes quick wit, smart script writing, and subtlety to present the reality of divorce and the long-term effects of childhood trauma. The gradual character reveal and childhood flashbacks add emotional depth. Breaking generational trauma cycles is never easy, but this film proves that building healthy family relationships are possible and worth every painful, healing step.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about what the filmmakers are trying to say about balancing your own happiness with family expectations. Is that possible? What is this film trying to say about family relationships? What would be the most important ingredient for a healthy family relationship?

  • Are Tim's parents presented fairly? Or do you find yourself siding with one side over the other? How does the gradual character reveal affect your opinions of Tim and his parents?

  • How is humor used to balance the seriousness of family conflict and divorce? Would the story feel different if presented as a drama?

  • Have you ever felt the pressure to meet other people's expectations and sacrifice your own happiness to please someone else? How does that compare to Tim's experience? Would you have done something differently if you were in Tim's position?
