What's the Story?

Washed-up rock star John Allman (Harry Connick Jr.) has relocated to Cyprus after his latest "comeback" album flops in FIND ME FALLING. He's bought a house on a cliff overlooking the sea, only to find out the place is known as a spot where people commit suicide. It turns out John also has a connection to the island, and a past involving a local doctor, Sia (Agni Scott). As the two explore their past romance, Allman gets to the know the locals, including nightclub singer Melina (Ali Fumiko Whitney) and local police chief Manoli (Tony Demetriou). Will Allman return to his career or make a new life on the island?

Featuring mature stars in an attractive setting, this is a more thoughtful romance than much of what Netflix has put out in the genre recently. Find Me Falling still follows the formula—bruised American relocates to isolated foreign locale, finding love and a newfound community (cue the quaint, busybody neighbors who prepare fabulous local dishes). Only here, the American already has a past with the place, details of which are meted out slowly. The film is best enjoyed with no prior information about events to unfold. Written and directed by a South African-Cypriot doesn't mean less exoticization of the locale, but the portrayal is clearly crafted with a lot of love.

Writer-director Stelana Kliris says her initial inspiration for the film was a news story about a man in a house on a cliff known as a suicide hot spot. That premise doesn't play out in a dark way, but it does infuse the main character with more depth. He becomes a guardian of lost souls in his lonely cliff-set house, which together with the romance give the film its name and also its theme song. Connick Jr. doesn't always deliver his lines with the naturalness of a leading man, but he's believable and likeable in the role of worn-out rock star. The standout performance belongs to Whitney as the energetic songbird who worms her way into his life.

  • The lead actor is a musician turned actor. What other musicians have segued into acting? How do the two careers relate?

  • Does the film explain why Melina has an American accent? The actress had to learn lines in Greek for the role. Does she pull off playing a local? What are the pros and cons to hiring non-local actors for a film set in specific locales?
