Finding Harmony: A King's Vision
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
FINDING HARMONY: A KING'S VISION is a documentary about King Charles III's decades-long work exploring the concept of harmony between humans and nature. It retraces his dedication to the subject, from one of his first public speeches at the age of 21, where he talks about pollution, through his early adoption of organic farming, and various projects focused on sustainability and environment around the world.
Is It Any Good?
There's no doubting the important messages behind this very British documentary—the King is the subject and Kate Winslet the narrator—but it doesn't quite make the impact it could. Finding Harmony: A King's Vision will likely educate many, be a call of arms to others, but may be a little reverential for some. The evidence is clear—King Charles III has been speaking out, exploring, and making an impact in the environmental world since young adulthood. One of his first public speeches—shown in the film—shines a light on the dangers of pollution at a time when not many well-known figures were speaking out. Organic farming methods are shown being introduced at his own property, when it was still considered "woo-woo" in the media. While the impact of The Harmony Project through The King's Foundation, reaches far and wide, from India to Afghanistan, from a beekeeping project at HMS Bristol to a local housing development designed inline with the King's philosophies.
Taking heads include former Vice President Al Gore, alongside professors from the University of Oxford, ocean and climate conservationists, and founders and directors of various projects run by or inspired by the King's work. There are Royal family videos, news and interview footage, and a current day dynamic where Charles watches his own past material on-screen. The movie has educational value, but nothing particularly groundbreaking , and there are moments of warmth and humor—Charles smiles giddily when a young child waves at him, takes a nostalgic moment when he sees his old dogs on-screen, and viewers are introduced to his hens at "Cluckingham Palace." What's being sold is a "relatable" man who's been ahead of his time in campaigning for something that's become increasingly acknowledged in the mainstream: that connection between nature, environment, and humanity. "We are a part of nature," says Charles, "not apart from it." And that's a strong message for any viewer to take back out into the world, and hopefully align with their own philosophies and actions.
