Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Fixed may be animated, but it's definitely not for young kids. It's the story of a dog avoiding castration, filled with explicitly portrayed and crudely discussed sexual scenarios, as well as extremely strong language. Dog butts, penises, and testicles are depicted, and dogs are driven by the sexual desire to hump human body parts, inanimate objects, and other dogs, seeking out and engaging in sexual acts of all kinds. Swearing includes "f--k," "s--t," "goddammit," "hell," "bitch," "a--hole," "douchebag," and much, much more. Sexual and anatomical language is also used throughout and includes "teabag," "boner," "slut," "nympho," "t-tties," "schlong," "c--k," "morning wood," "perv," "ball sack," "nuts," "ass play," and more. A dog accidentally gets high and hallucinates. Animated violence involves falls, crashes, chaos at a dog show, animals getting run over or devoured, cats attacking dogs, dogs being captured and thrown into the pound, and much discussion of castration (bandages and references to "mutilation" and being "butchered"). All of that said, characters do learn that being different is good and that what's on the inside counts more than looks or "pedigree." The voice cast includes Adam Devine, Kathryn Hahn, Idris Elba, and more well-known names.

Sex, Romance & Nudity
a lot
Dogs are driven by the sexual desire to hump human body parts, inanimate objects (dog toys, furniture), and other dogs. This is depicted in human-like ways, in terms of pleasure sounds (moaning, sex talk), positions (sitting and missionary "like humans," anal, oral, etc.), and expressions of desire. Dog butts, penises, and testicles are depicted. Male dogs visit a "dog whorehouse"/"house of pleasure," where they witness a dog orgy and other sexual acts. Female dogs visit later and watch a sexy show. A male dog is sad that he will lose his testicles, which he names and calls "the boys in the back" and his "hairy, dangling muses." Sexual and anatomical language is used throughout (see Language). There's discussion more than once of female dog parts being "tight" and "tighter where it counts."

Underlying the bawdy content is the theme that being different is good. Also, self-acceptance and self-love require work, but they pay off in a happier life. Overconfidence is a turn-off, and it's important to have family and friends who love you for you.
Positive Role Models
a little
Dogs delight in their owners' love and care. They also obsess over basic needs, like peeing, pooping, eating, and—especially—fornicating. The male dogs form a pack and look out for one another.
Diverse Representations
very little
The main character is a mutt who's in love with a show dog, and the story emphasizes that what's on the inside counts more than looks or "pedigree." The main dog is also about to be "fixed," leading him and his buddies to grapple with how they define their masculinity. One dog has both male and female genitalia and is referred to as "they." The voice cast features some diversity in nationality and race, but this isn't woven into the story beyond accents.
In FIXED, a mutt named Bull (voiced by Adam Devine) lives a happy life in the suburbs, humping Grandma's leg and chatting daily through the fence with his best friend (and love interest), Honey (Kathryn Hahn). When Bull discovers that his owners are planning to take him to get "fixed," he runs away. His pack of friends—led by tough Rocco (Idris Elba)—follows him, and the gang experiences a night they'll never forget in the big city.
This bawdy, mature animated comedy will probably entertain anyone who finds genitals, bodily functions, and masturbation limitlessly funny, but everyone else may want to pass. A castration journey written and directed entirely from a male perspective (based on the director's high school friends, who also seem to be the target audience?), Fixed is purposely intended to shock, with explicit anthropomorphized animal sex and language.
The 2D animation is pleasant but not groundbreaking, so the focus is on the story, which is pretty thin. Still, the characters do have their charm, especially as they reveal their softer sides; the soundtrack is catchy; and some of the scenarios are genuinely funny. If only the film didn't wallow quite so much in its own crudeness. A little subtlety can go a long way.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the sexual humor and language in Fixed. Do you think the film is trying to shock audiences? If so, is it successful? Why, or why not?
What other mature animated series and films have you seen? How did this one compare?
Fixed has a cast of well-known voice actors. Who did you recognize? If you were casting the film, who would you hire for the main characters, and why?
How would you summarize the movie's message? Is that message clear, or is it secondary to the mature content?
