Fountain of Youth
What's the Story?
In FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH, Luke Purdue (John Krasinski) reunites with his younger sister, Charlotte (Natalie Portman), in an unconventional way—by stealing art out of the museum where she works. He's just completed an earlier heist in Bangkok that almost got him killed. He explains to Charlotte that the artworks each carry a code which, taken together, offer clues to a long-pursued mystery: the location of a fountain of youth. Fresh off a nasty divorce, Charlotte is intrigued to adventure again, like she and Luke used to do with their anthropologist father, and to put her art history expertise to use. Luke's team includes billionaire Owen Carver (Domhnall Gleeson), Deb (Carmen Ejogo), Murphy (Laz Alonso), and Charlotte's young son, Thomas (Benjamin Chivers). Hot on their heels are mysterious avenger Esme (Eiza Gonzalez) and police inspector Jamal Abbas (Arian Moayed).
Is It Any Good?
The Da Vinci Code meets Indiana Jones in Guy Ritchie's uneven action-adventure tale, which feels overly familiar throughout but manages to end on a higher note. The closing sequences of Fountain of Youth cap off two hours full of choreographed action—car chases, knife fights, shoot-outs, and so on—but offer the most original ideas and video game-inspired visuals.
Before that, it's hard not to feel you've seen much of this before. Globe-trotting adventurers dart from city to city, snapping off snarky one-liners and cleverly evading the dangerous parties trailing them. In their London lair, the heist team seems to have slide deck presentations eternally at the ready to explain plot points. Some of their dialogues are also surprisingly stiff—it's so noticeable you have to assume it's intentional. The ending suggests Apple might be looking for a franchise. If so, future entries should keep the international action but delve a little deeper into the characters.
