What's the Story?
In FURIES, Bi (Dong Anh Quynh) is raised in poverty and sees her sex worker mother killed in front of her by a drunken client who attempts to rape her. Years later, she's living on the streets in Ho Chi Minh City, having to fight off men daily who wish her harm. One day a woman comes to her rescue just as three men are about to rape her. Lin (Veronica Ngo), as she's known, takes Bi in alongside two other young women she picked up off the streets. These two, Thanh (Toc Tien) and Hong (Rima Thanh Vy), become like sisters to Bi as the trio train under Lin to take care of themselves and take on the local drug lords who are trafficking women.
Is It Any Good?
Despite some exciting choreography of female-driven fight scenes and flashy use of color, light, freeze-frame, and split-screen, this film falls short on story in its drive to shock. Furies does indeed shock in its insistence on depicting grisly scenes of women being abused. While it may expose a harsh reality, it also creates a spectacle of that cruelty. Furies will find its fans, and it isn't the first movie to seek entertainment value in the mistreatment of women, drug abuse, and extreme violence. But when it turns out at the movie's end that the leader of the female vigilantes had less than altruistic motives all along, the characters ask whether the massacres and sacrifices were worth it. Viewers might wonder the same.

Is the violence in this film, particularly toward women, necessary for the story? Does it ever feel excessive to you? How do you think filmmakers decide where to draw that line?
