What's the Story?

The two title students of GEEZ & ANN are exemplary young people living in Jakarta. Geez (Junior Roberts) wants to be a musician but because his driven, wealthy businesswoman mother has a business life plotted for him, he sets aside his passion and agrees to study business in Germany to appease her. Before his departure, he falls for Ann (Hanggini Purinda Retto), the hardworking high school senior who is bent on doing homework and studying medicine at university, and pursues her mightily. Ann is a reluctant girlfriend and when he reveals that he's had to hide her from his snooty mother, Ann lays out her demands. She wants him to always tell her the truth, and to never make promises he can't keep. With nary a kiss between them, he leaves for Germany as she starts med school. Promises are broken, forcing her to break off the relationship. When her father, an out-of-work photographer, suffers a second heart attack, the dutiful and devoted Ann takes a job at a café to help support the family and raise money for her father's heart surgery. With Geez out of the picture, Ann accepts a marriage proposal from another wonderful guy. Geez returns from his years in Germany as ardent as ever, leaving Ann with a difficult choice.

If the 105-minute Geez & Ann had been compressed into a half-hour sitcom format, nothing would've been lost. These two teen role models -- excellent students, devoted family members, and chaste and respectful citizens -- may be the dream of many parents, but in the realm of riveting drama, these guys make for one boring flop. Roberts and Retto have charming smiles, but riveting star-crossed lovers they are not. Still, tweens might find the whole thing sweet and swoon-worthy even if parents roll their eyes.
