Squeaky-clean teen romance is predictable and dull.
A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this movie.
Meant to entertain rather than educate.
Family is important. When family members are difficult, don't give up on them. Sometimes we need to compromise on the road to achieving our dreams. Don't make promises you can't keep.
Positive Role Models
Geez is a dutiful son who hides his guitar when his mom forbids his pursuit of music. He studies according to her plan for him. Once he's done, he wants to proceed with his own life, but with her blessing. His mother is a judgmental snob. Ann is a responsible, hardworking student and daughter who takes a job to help support her family in tough times.

Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Geez & Ann is an Indonesian teen romance (in Indonesian with English subtitles). The movie is based on a popular Indonesian young adult novel by Rintik Sedu. Parental interference puts a damper on the respectful relationship between a wannabe musician forbidden to play music by his controlling mother and a diligent pre-med student. Displays of affection are limited to hand-holding. Jaunty pop music accompanies the action as the two responsible and honorable kids grow to become responsible and honorable young adults. This movie is remarkable for the absence of sex, language, drug use, and other staples of teen life as commonly depicted in popular entertainment. Someone says "hell." A man falls while having a heart attack. Girls giggle over cute boys.

What's the Story?
The two title students of GEEZ & ANN are exemplary young people living in Jakarta. Geez (Junior Roberts) wants to be a musician but because his driven, wealthy businesswoman mother has a business life plotted for him, he sets aside his passion and agrees to study business in Germany to appease her. Before his departure, he falls for Ann (Hanggini Purinda Retto), the hardworking high school senior who is bent on doing homework and studying medicine at university, and pursues her mightily. Ann is a reluctant girlfriend and when he reveals that he's had to hide her from his snooty mother, Ann lays out her demands. She wants him to always tell her the truth, and to never make promises he can't keep. With nary a kiss between them, he leaves for Germany as she starts med school. Promises are broken, forcing her to break off the relationship. When her father, an out-of-work photographer, suffers a second heart attack, the dutiful and devoted Ann takes a job at a café to help support the family and raise money for her father's heart surgery. With Geez out of the picture, Ann accepts a marriage proposal from another wonderful guy. Geez returns from his years in Germany as ardent as ever, leaving Ann with a difficult choice.
Is It Any Good?
If the 105-minute Geez & Ann had been compressed into a half-hour sitcom format, nothing would've been lost. These two teen role models -- excellent students, devoted family members, and chaste and respectful citizens -- may be the dream of many parents, but in the realm of riveting drama, these guys make for one boring flop. Roberts and Retto have charming smiles, but riveting star-crossed lovers they are not. Still, tweens might find the whole thing sweet and swoon-worthy even if parents roll their eyes.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the respect and patience Geez displayed to his cold and controlling mother for so many years. Do you think his patience changed the dynamic of their relationship or do you think she'll always try to control him? Why?
Does the movie suggest what the future will bring for the main characters? What do you think will happen to them?
Why do you think Ann withdrew from the relationship? Did she have good reason? Why or why not?
