Get Away If You Can
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In GET AWAY IF YOU CAN, TJ (Terrence Martin) and Domi (Dominique Braun) go on an open-water sail to rekindle their romance and save their marriage. When they disagree about their travel plans, they go their separate ways on a mysterious landmass known as "The Island of Despair."
Is It Any Good?
This movie about marital problems spends most of its time adrift but eventually finds its mooring in fascinating interactions with nature -- like swimming with seals -- and an unexpected ending. Movies are usually about the beginning of a romance: the "meet cute," the flutterings, the first kiss, the "I do." The vows are the happy ending. Get Away If You Can picks up when reality -- work demands, family interference, personality clashes -- sets in. The ugly part of love is when it fades, and real-life filmmaking couple Martin and Braun bare it all, both in script and in body, to share their perspective on how to get the spark back.
Alas, with storytelling and acting as choppy as the emotional waters Domi and TJ are navigating, the film's title can feel less like relationship advice and more like a warning to viewers. Time jumps are constant and challenging to keep up with; at times, TJ's haircut is the only indicator of what's happening when. But there's a lot of honesty on the screen, even if TJ and Domi's path to try to get back to each other is extreme. For viewers whose relationship needs repair, this earthy drama may be a source of inspiration. For everyone else, abandon ship.
