What's the Story?

GOYO (Nicolás Furtado) is an autistic young man who loves Van Gogh and works as a museum guide. His life is turned upside down when he falls in love with Eva (Nancy Dupláa), a middle-aged security guard who starts working at the museum and exposes him to feelings and experiences he had never imagined.

There were so many ways in which Marcos Carnevale's romantic comedy about a character with autism could've gone wrong. And yet, Goyo, is a masterclass in how to center a neurodivergent character in a story that's not exclusively about his neurodivergence. Nicolás Furtado gives a rich, fully empathic performance as the title character, a curious, well-mannered young man who is devoted to the art world. Goyo seems to vanish when he's carefully explaining the history and meaning of paintings in the museum where he works, and Carnevale makes sure we understand this is the same way Goyo perceives the world.

Featuring an ensemble of Argentinian titans, Goyo weaves a beautiful tapestry of supporting characters who have lives beyond their role in the lead's life. Most striking is Nancy Dupláa's portrayal of Eva, a middle-aged single mother learning how to love herself again. An eleventh-hour appearance by Cecilia Roth as Goyo's seemingly detached mother makes this an almost perfect film meant to be enjoyed by teens and adults alike.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how Goyo shows courage and integrity as he leads his daily life as a museum worker. Do you think he does his job well? Why or why not?

  • Actor Nicolás Furtado is not neurodivergent, but do you think he plays Goyo in a respectful manner? Should actors who are not neurodivergent play characters who are? Why or why not?

  • How does Eva show compassion in her relationship with Goyo? Where have you seen similar romances in other films?
