What's the Story?

In Guardians of the Galapagos, the film crew behind Sea Lions of the Galapagos arrive to the islands and set out on a boat to begin the search for their "main characters" (the sea lions) and explore the island location. Along the way, they encounter environments rarely visited before by humans, as well as plenty of sea animals in their untouched natural habitats. They also encounter pollution and other factors negatively impacting the area, and they collaborate with local and international scientists to help save the environment and its inhabitants, as well as to educate future generations.

This is an interesting companion piece to Sea Lions of the Galapagos because it veers away from just showing how that documentary got made, instead exploring larger issues at stake. That could leave some viewers of Guardians of the Galapagos a little disappointed that they don't get to see even further behind the scenes of the original. For example, the team in Guardians originally sets out to find its "hero" and "main character," which they do in sea lion pup Leo. But that storyline isn't the main focus afterward.

While Sea Lions seems to follow Leo for at least a decade of his life, we don't see that here. This film does show viewers how the expert team gathers its footage from above and below the water. But ultimately the film focuses more on the threats that the whole Galapagos environment is facing due to global climate change and pollution. That's certainly the larger and more important message of the filmmakers' work, and it's supported by extensive footage from this unique region. The coral farms and tuna chase are particularly memorable.
