What's the Story?
GURU tells the story of Gurukant "Guru" Desai (Abhishek Bachchan), a middle-class man from a small village in the state of Gujarat. Guru travels to Bombay with his wife, Sujata (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), and his brother-in-law, Jignesh (Arya Babbar), to start his own business and achieve his dreams. Facing intense challenges and obstacles at every corner, will Guru be able to rise above them and claim victory?
Is It Any Good?
Directed by Mani Ratnam, this Indian drama is a delightful blend of fascinating storytelling and immense entertainment. Guru brings together A. R. Rahman's tasteful tunes with Gulzar's lyrics, and these combined with its powerful cast make it not a mere movie but a milestone in Bollywood cinema. Rumored to be loosely based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani, Ratnam's film gorgeously pans across a post-independent India and tells a gripping tale of an industrial tycoon's journey to success. Yet, it's not his story alone. Linked to him are multiple smaller tales within the plot that add a density to each of the film's characters, even those positioned as antagonists. Weaving together romance, comedy, drama, and tragedy in its neat yet vast narration, Guru is a must-watch movie.
