Parents' Guide to Haider

Parents need to know that Haider is an Indian action drama and reimagining of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The story follows the central character, Haider (Shahid Kapoor), who returns to Kashmir amid political conflict after his father goes missing. Expect heavy violence, with characters killed or injured by guns, shovels, sticks, and stones. There are scenes of incarceration and brutal torture by armed forces, as well as graphic shots of corpses covered in blood, explosions, vandalism, protests, brawls, and a surgical procedure. Suicide and PTSD are dominant themes. Someone jumps from a bridge, and another person holds a gun to their own head. In an elaborate sequence, a character wearing a vest full of grenades takes their own life, with ruptured body parts shown. There is kissing, flirting, and implied sex, with characters seen getting intimate in bed; no explicit nudity. A hookah is briefly seen in the background but not smoked. Language includes "fool," "rascal," "wicked," "idiot," and "snake." The film is in Hindi with English subtitles available.
