What's the Story?
Chris Ballew, Laurie Berkner, Divinity Roxx, Johnny Only, and The Wiggles are successful children's musicians who offer their perspectives on their work, the state of the genre, and stereotypes they confront in HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT. We see footage of their performances, small and large, as well as some of their music videos, online reels, and past work. Kids and parents give their opinions about children's music as well.
Is It Any Good?
Memorable characters make this otherwise somewhat unremarkable documentary a worthwhile watch. That director Penny Lane was able to land everyone from The Wiggles to former rockers Chris Ballew and Divinity Roxx for Happy and You Know It lends her film increased interest. By sticking to talking heads and videos of performances (as well as some online material), Lane hasn't exactly innovated. Nor has she added more than her sources gave her. But, her talking heads effuse joy for their crafts, and their dedication makes this documentary both educational and entertaining.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the message in Happy and You Know It: that good children's music should appeal to all audiences and takes hard work to get right. Do you agree with this? Where do you see evidence of this in the movie?
Some of the people interviewed had successful careers in bands making music for adults (like The Presidents of the United States of America, Beyoncé's tour band). What were their rationales for switching to the children's music field?
What perspectives did the rock critic and culture critic bring to this film? Were there any voices missing for you?
