Hard Truths
What's the Story?
HARD TRUTHS delves into the life of Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) and her husband Curtley (David Webber), who live in London with their son Moses (Tuwaine Barrett). Far from a happy household, the family struggles under the weight of Pansy's constant anger toward everyone and eveything. Yet, Pansy's anger ultimately consumes one person more than anyone else: herself.
Is It Any Good?
This eagerly anticipated return of kitchen-sink realist Mike Leigh reunites the filmmaker with his Secrets & Lies star Jean-Baptiste in a moving and, at times, surprisingly funny drama. While Hard Truths is sprinkled with Leigh's trademark droll wit—delivering several laugh-out-loud moments—it remains firmly anchored by the depression gripping its lead, Pansy. Pansy is a complex, multi-layered character, allowing Jean-Baptiste the perfect platform to showcase her extraordinary talents. Every cutting remark she delivers is not only felt by her intended target but by the audience too. Despite the emotional walls Pansy builds—often alienating her from her family—Jean-Baptiste reveals the pain of a woman desperately needing the help she can't bring herself to accept. Some might feel like Pansy's outbursts occasionally border on caricature, with moments reminiscent of a Scrooge-like persona. Yet this only underscores Leigh's talents as a filmmaker and Jean-Baptiste's as an actor, creating a character who is as sharp as she is poignant.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Hard Truths portrayed depression. Did it feel authentic? What were some of the reasons Pansy felt the way she did? Why is it important to talk about our mental health and well-being?
Talk about the strong language in the movie. Did it add anything to the movie?
Despite some of the heavy themes, the film has a number of comedic moments. Did this work tonally? Why, or why not? Did it remind you of any other films you've seen?
