A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Have a Nice Day! is a Mexican comedy-drama about an ex-radio host named Enrique who now works as a bagger at a grocery store. Hoping to eventually make his way back to Mexico City, he first needs to save up enough money to get him there. While working at the grocery store, Enrique befriends a young man, Picho, who hopes to become closer to a coworker. Enrique offers help, but only if Picho helps him with stealing cardboard boxes and metal pipes from the garage. There are some scenes of homophobic violence (a man is called a "f--king queer" multiple times), a mother who slaps and beats her son after he comes home late, and strong language throughout ("f--k," "f--ker," "f--kng," "s--t," "a--hole," "damn," "queer," "hell," "bastard," "piss," and "geezer"). Some kissing, some romantic dancing, and an older man talking about how he takes Viagra. The main character constantly smokes cigarettes. Adults drink alcohol often. A teenage boy drinks too much one night and vomits.

What's the Story?
In HAVE A NICE DAY! Enrique (Alvaro Guerrero) is an ex-radio host who had reached semi-fame spinning rock and roll music. He longs for those days, but now only wishes to eventually make it back to Mexico City to rekindle an old flame. But in order to do so, he needs money, so he gets a job as a bagger at a grocery store, concocts a scheme to earn extra cash while there, and ropes in Picho (Eduardo Minett), a nice young man and coworker, to help.
Is It Any Good?
There is some charm to this simple comedy-drama. There isn't much overt or ridiculous comedy in Have a Nice Day! But there is some light humor, situationally. Most of the charm comes from the characters. Even if they are drawn a bit narrowly, the acting is solid. The world around them is convincing in its locality, and the sense of smallness makes sure that once the bigger world is glimpsed, it satisfyingly amazes and entrances Enrique, Picho, and Amanda.
The film does, however, spend a lot of time figuring out how to get to the prompt that will propel them out of their small lives, but once they do, it's more than welcome, if brief. The lessons about not wasting life away until it's too late reverberate well by the end.
