What's the Story?

In HOLY DAYS, three nuns—Sisters Agnes (Judy Davis), Mary Clare (Jacki Weaver), and Luke (Miriam Margolyes)—discover they're about to be ousted from their home by property developers. In an attempt to find the deeds to their convent, they embark on a road trip, accompanied by local boy Brian (Elijah Tamati), who's struggling with some life changes of his own.

This is a mild, feel-good comedy that centers a heartwarming relationship between three nuns and a young boy in crisis. There's nothing that particularly sets Holy Days apart from similar films, but it's a warm, enjoyable romp with likable characters and an impish spirit. There's some silly humor that doesn't always hit that mark—dentures repeatedly falling out—but mostly the movie leans more into the human aspects of its characters and messages about empathy, acceptance, and new beginnings, as well as having the courage to stand up for what's right.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how characters learn and grow in Holy Days. What does Brian, in particular, learn during his time with the nuns? How does it help him to move forward with his life?

  • How do characters show empathy in the movie? Why is that an important character strength in real life, too?

  • The film centers on a road trip storyline. How does it compare to other movies that focus on a road trip? Why do you think this structure is often used to tell stories about connection between characters and personal journeys?

  • How is smoking and drinking depicted in the film? Is it glamorized? Why does that matter?
