Honeymoon Crasher
What's the Story?
When Lucas (Julien Frison) is abandoned at the altar at the start of HONEYMOON CRASHER, he's out a wife and a planned life—as well as a lot of borrowed money to afford a fancy honeymoon trip to Mauritius. When his mother, Lily (Michèle Laroque), offers to accompany him and he senses the trip could make his ex jealous, Lucas decides to take the honeymoon trip anyway. But when hotel hostess Gloria (Rossy de Palma), pleasantly surprised by their age difference, upgrades Lily and Lucas to the nicest suite, they must carry on the sham of being newlyweds. That won't be the only difficulty of their stay: The pair realize how imbalanced their mother-son relationship is, and, with the help of a few new friends at the resort, they'll find it's high time to work through all of it.
Is It Any Good?
The third time might be the charm for this remake of a remake. Honeymoon Crasher gets off to a slow start, with ill-paced comedic scenes set to overly jaunty music. But when the film starts to take itself a little more seriously about halfway through, it feels much more authentic, and the story gets more interesting. A grown son learning how to take care of himself, and an empty-nester mom finally commanding to be treated as a woman (rather than as a wife/mother) provide a dramatic soul to what could have been just another toss-away comedy or unnecessary remake.
