What's the Story?

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL is about a birthday party arranged by eccentric millionaire amusement park owner Steven Price (Geoffrey Rush) for his wife, Evelyn (Famke Janssen), and the five people who are invited. Both Steven and Evelyn are into horror, so Steven throws the party in an abandoned psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane, where nearly everyone there died in a riot in the 1930s. Of course, the current owner (Chris Kattan) claims that the place is haunted, so Price offers $1 million to any of the five who survive the night in the building. When they all become trapped in the house, things start to get very bad, and eventually worse than any of them could have imagined. Will anyone survive?

This horror remake from 1999 has a lot of superficial elements that fans of the genre will be looking for. Unfortunately, the plot and action are so slow and plodding that if feels like it takes forever to get to the end we all see coming from the beginning. There are few surprises along the way, and they're not helped by a few weak jump scares. The horrific images are just about all this movie has going for it, which for true fans of horror might make it enough to earn cult status.
