What's the Story?

In I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE 2, Katie (Jemma Dallender) is an aspiring model living in New York who answers an ad for free portfolio photos. When she's made to feel uncomfortable at the shoot, she leaves and expects to never see them again. But when one of the men follows her home and rapes her in her apartment, it starts a long ordeal of assault and torture that leaves her hellbent on revenge.

Is It Any Good?

Kids say ( 1 ):

While the 2010 remake from director Steven R. Monroe went some way toward centering the female experience more than the original, his follow-up feels like it goes back to square one. Whereas the remake gave more time to the revenge aspect than the sexual assaults themselves, I Spit on Your Grave 2 has extended scenes of female nudity that swing it back around to exploitation. What's more, the sheer level and length of the types of torture Katie exacts on her attackers takes away from anything the film may have tried to say about the horrific nature of the original crimes. It's gratuitous, it's gross-out in places, and the initial attempt to build up the lead character in a more feminist way just gets lost amid the sea of blood, guts, and squelched body parts. Unless you're a major fan of the franchise, or of torture porn for its own sake, it may be wise to give this a miss.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the level of violence in I Spit on Your Grave 2. The film focuses on violence carried out on Katie at the start, and then the violence she carries out later. How did it balance the two? Did you think it was too extreme? What do you think is the appeal of watching movies like this, that are sometimes referred to as "torture porn"?

  • The movie is a sequel to the remake of the 1978 film of the same name, and there have since been two further sequels. What do you think it is about this franchise that's appealing? Do you think the infamy of the original makes the series more popular?

  • Did you think there was a feminist or empowering aspect to the film? How did it compare to other movies that involve a woman exacting revenge following a sexual assault, such as Revenge or Promising Young Woman?

  • Discuss the strong language used. Did it seem necessary, or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie?
