What's the Story?

Filmed by director Nico Ballesteros over a span of six years (from 2018 to 2024), IN WHOSE NAME? is an unfiltered documentary about Ye (formerly known as Kanye West). Condensing more than 3,000 hours of raw, behind-the-scenes footage into a two-hour narrative, the film depicts Ye's life and struggles as he balances fame, marriage, family, public criticism, multiple business ventures, faith, and bipolar disorder.

This documentary is an intense exploration of fame and fragility that not only examines Ye's character through a truthful lens but forces viewers to confront contradictions that we all live with. In Whose Name? offers a raw, unfiltered behind-the-scenes look into Ye's personal journey as it presents an honest but also tragic portrait of a huge celebrity, capturing his real struggles and gut-wrenching breakdowns. By looking at how fame and mental health collide, the film invites viewers to think about the complexities of being both the hero and the villain in our own stories—and the effects that those complexities can have on our own internal battles between light and darkness, faith and ego, strength and weakness, creativity and destruction.

In Whose Name? doesn't hold back from presenting Ye's disorienting moments, polarizing commentary, and extreme absolutes. And, without swaying the narrative, it asks viewers to lean in, witness Ye's acts, take in his words, and sit in discomfort while ultimately drawing their own conclusions about him—and themselves. It depicts Ye authentically: He's heated, confrontational, and controversial to the core. At times, it's hard to decipher what's lucid reality and what is fantastical delusion. But no matter how you feel about Kanye West, this film about his life stands as a powerful work of art: It's chaotic, detailed, personal, and thought-provoking, with lots of room for interpretation.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the film's title, In Whose Name? It begs the question: When someone's life is documented, who should have the final say over how their story is portrayed: the subject, the filmmaker, or the audience? Why?

  • Ye is portrayed as both brilliant and self-destructive throughout the film, often reinventing himself. What does the film suggest about how someone's identity is formed? Do you think people can fully change who they are, or are we always tied to our past?

  • Ye openly struggles with his bipolar diagnosis. How does seeing a public figure deal with mental illness change (or not change) how we think about mental health in our own lives?

  • The film shows that Ye is constantly living under public scrutiny. Do you think fame affects someone's authenticity? Would you ever want that level of fame? Why, or why not?
