Is This Thing On?
What's the Story?
In IS THIS THING ON?, Alex Novak (Will Arnett) finds himself standing on stage during an open-mic night at a comedy club and uses the spotlight to talk about his pending divorce. Finding the experience soul soothing, he joins the regular line-up, establishing friendships with other comics and treating the chance to discuss his marital woes like therapy—until the night that his ex, Tess (Laura Dern), is in the audience.
Is It Any Good?
This dramedy is a fulfilling watch for anyone whose marriage has—or hasn't—gone the distance. Alex and Tess are soulmates who've been together for 26 years, since college, and some of their lowest moments can make Is This Thing On? a challenging watch. But in their separation, they recall their original spark. And as they rediscover each other—finally saying things that should've been said long ago—they decide they need to keep their rekindled relationship a secret so they don't create false hope for their children. That's good advice to keep in mind.
Those in a long-lasting commitment know that partnership brings moments of both mirth and mayhem, which are definitely intensified if kids are in the picture. Managing the curveballs while maintaining your own sense of identity and personal fulfillment is a real challenge. That's what makes Is This Thing On? a meaningful film for couples at any stage of long-term monogamy, including the post-mortem variety.

What's the difference between "passion" and "purpose"? Which describes the activities that Tess and Alex pursue after they break up? Why is it important to do something you enjoy outside of family? Why do you think adults sometimes forget to keep up their hobbies and interests?
The movie is based on a true story, including Alex initially going on stage because he didn't have the money for the cover charge. Did you find the story—and the ending—realistic? Why do you think this couple was able to rekindle their relationship?
Does the movie glamorize or normalize smoking, drinking, and drug use? Are there realistic consequences? Why does that matter?
